First time on the ice in 2018

The Custom Jigs & Spins Slender Spoon took top honors, including bring in my 198th fish state award. I used 3 Custom Jigs lures – Glo Pro Slender Spoon, Demon and Rocker. No bait was used on the Slender Spoon, but a Power Crappie Nibble was applied to the Demon and Rocker.

All crappie, the largest bluegill and 2 of the 4 bass were caught on the Slender Spoon. The largest bass took the Glow Rocker.

Most of the fish were found suspended at 4 to 5 feet over 8 feet of water.

Ice thickness varied from 6 to 12 inches.

By the end of the day a fissure snapped and water poured onto one section of the lake, where I was wading in a huge puddle about 3 inches deep. It went between the top of the ice and snow, making it one of those weird feelings when you break through the top layer of crusty snow.

I was able to use my new Frabill Sentinel one-man ice shelter. Previously I had the 2-man Deluxe Trekker, which made it uncertain as to how I would like the smaller unit. However, all in all it is a nice unit. The bright yellow zipper in the front glows inside like a light. I can see very well without having to open any of the windows or flip open the shelter. It also kept me warm enough to fish comfortably. After having all the problems with my hands I wasn’t sure as to how it would be, but with a warmer day, and lots of sun, along with the shelter I did fairly well. Towards the end of the day as I pulled all of my stuff across the lake, and up a steep hill to my vehicle, my left hand was starting to feel it a little in the ends of my fingers.

The Mr. Heater Buddy was left in the vehicle just in case it was needed.

The next two days are supposed to be nice, in temperature, so hopefully I’ll be able to give it another try.

Until next time, get out on the water, and enjoy a great day of fishing.
