If everything goes as planned, the wolf will be delisted in Wyoming this fall, except inside Yellowstone National Park. That means it will be up to the state of Wyoming to manage the population at sustainable levels. If the wolf population gets reduced too much, the wolves will be placed back on the endangered species list – under federal control.
Wyoming’s Game and Fish department have estimated that to keep levels at a sustainable number, hunters will harvest about 52 wolves. By including other means of death, either through poaching, or roadkill, etc., the total number of wolf deaths is expected to be around 98. Currently the population is at 270 wolves outside of Yellowstone. With these proposed hunting rules it should keep a sustainable population of wolves, around 170 by next December for Wyoming.
