VA State Catfish Championship

LewLew Compton Compton becomes the first angler to win a state catfish championship in Virginia. Compton now holds the title of Grand Champion. He also joins fellow anglers, Alan Conner and Micheal McGomery to become the first in history to catch, weigh, and release three different species of catfish during a tournament.

The Catfish Showdown hosted the first 2013 Virginia State Catfish Championship at Buggs/Kerr Lake on Saturday, August 17. A total of 104 anglers and 44 boats fished 10 hours in the rain for their chance to place in the top five payout positions.

Mr. Compton weighed three fish: 17.32 lb Blue, 30.32 lb Flathead, and 2.16 lb Channel for a total weight of 49.80 lbs. A three catfish weigh-in tournament rule emphasized on Blues, Flatheads, and Channels. Each boat were permitted to weigh three fish, but not mandatory as any combination could win.

A total of 685.58 lbs of catfish from three different species, weighed by 43 anglers, braved rainy weather conditions for their chance to win. The championship proved its competitiveness with three species instead of one. The anglers who entered the competition had to strategize their catch and concentrate on timing.

The region experienced the wettest July on record with 12 inches of rain. Add more rain into the mix with catfish transitioning into the fall pattern, and you got yourself a challenge. Everyone who fished the championship dedicated 100% of their efforts to weigh a winning catfish.
