Three Days in a Tree

Three Days in a TreeFt Polk Wildlife Management Area is a beautiful place, the Green Mansions. A good place for me to hunt Turkey, Deer and Wild Boar all public land but few go there. It can be a dangerous place if you don’t know the area. There are pitfalls, pine holes, all the snakes that can kill you, quick sand and weather that will sneak up on you on a clear day that you can’t see for the triple canopy forest.

If you are injured and pass out in these places there is a good chance you will not be found. Sounders of wild hogs patrol the areas at night and eat everything, this would include each other and humans.

The Ruger Scout Rifle seems to be the go to gun when I go in there. The Vortex Crossfire ll with the little red dot is the fastest scope I have ever used. Three hogs appeared and I dropped one with no room to spare. Then the unseen storm hit crashing huge trees and cracks of lighting all around me, I was 1.3 miles away from the truck and I decided to bug out as it was close to dark. Returning the next day found the hog totally devoured. That could have been me.

It was a great test for the Rifle and Scope. The cleaned up nicely and went right back to work. The 3 day Thanksgiving hunt was at hand, and the weather had cleared.

Packing an O’le Man tree stand back in there with rifle and gear is not for the cup cakes. My Hunting Partner is 37 and I’m almost 63 we are both retired Army so we think its a walk in the park.

The little buck played cat and mouse with me never presenting a good shot. I’m known to make the “Impossible Shot” but even that didn’t present itself and the little buck, never knowing I was there, may live to be a big one. For 3 days all I got was the Red Ass from sitting in the stand. Thats OK, I shall return….Pass it on.
