The issue of sector separation in the red snapper fishing industryKeeping up with fishery management issues can be a fulltime job these days. One species or another, in one region of the country or another is constantly under the pressure of data collection for resource management. Even if you wonder if the managers take public input seriously, the public cannot stop giving the input and here is another opportunity. Sometimes those folks on the water know more about what is happening in a fishery than the ones charged with managing it, so keep those cards and letters flowing.

Here’s the next chance to comment on the red snapper fishery. Interested parties should let the NMSF know how Amendment 40 will effect them. Florida Charter Capt. Bob Zales, has been involved in fishery issues for years. He says, “Public comments should include the impacts on local small businesses, supporting businesses, marinas, fuel sellers, tackle shops, as well as charter businesses, headboats, guide boats, state licensed only boats, bait sellers, local communities. Even the impact on private recreational anglers needs to be measured because when they lose opportunities to fish it has economic value to the community”

The Environmental Protection Agency announced the availability of a draft environmental impact statement on September 5, 2014 (79 FR 53061) related to Amendment 40.
