The Frontier Sports Fishing Report

The Frontier Sports Hwy 38 Resurfacing Update…. Friday, June 29th, 2018

There are 2 road closures on Hwy 38 today. One is a 24-hour closure just south of North Star Lake Road and the other is a daytime only closure. This is in the Day lake area. Thunderstorms rocked the area last night and into the morning. Wind gusts of seventy miles per hour knocked down a lot of trees many that ended up lying on the roads in the area. Power outages have been reported as well. Hwy 38 on the way to Bigfork had some big trees come down on the road almost blocking traffic. The lightning bolts and the rumbling went on for almost an hour. Looking out the window at all the chaos I saw something I had never seen before. I saw what looked like a pale yellow shaft coming down from the clouds and when it touched the ground a lightning bolt shot straight thru it…. upwards! I’ve been told that static electricity was the cause of this. What with all the lightning flying overhead it’s quite possible that the air became supercharged with static electricity.

That reminded me of a thunderstorm and a small cabin at a resort in this area. I was eight years old at the time. About two in the morning a huge thunderstorm hit the area. Lightning and loud thunder claps were shaking the cabin but I was asleep and knew nothing of what was going on outside. For some reason, I was a participant in a very strange dream. Like the old Viking sagas, there was a giant on a hill throwing huge boulders down on the resort! The giant was trying to crush the cabins. Now, remember I was an eight-year-old with a vivid imagination. As I slept I could see the boulders crashing into the cabins, essentially flattening each one. Then I saw it coming. An incredibly large boulder was coming straight down on me. I saw it slam into me and then… the dream was gone. I was very relaxed, sleeping deeply when I felt someone shaking me and I could hear a frantic voice telling me to wake up. My mother was trying to get me to wake up and when I finally did I could tell she was very upset and wondered, now what did I do? There was smoke in the cabin too. She grabbed me by the hand and lead me into their bedroom. My father was trying to put out the fire that was burning on the bed. I had no idea what was going on as he tossed water onto the blankets and finally put it out. My father looked at me and pointed toward the hole in the wall. What happened? He stood there and told me the whole story while the lightning and load roar of thunder continued.

The hole in the wall was from a bolt of lightning that hit the cabin and went through the wall and hit the brass bed, starting the blankets on fire. My father’s big toe was about an inch from the bed frame when it hit. The lightning hit the cabin at the same moment the boulder in my dream crushed me! My parents were quite shaken but I was tired and just went back to sleep. In the morning we went outside to see the hit and it was impressive. The resort owner took a look too and just shook his head. He had never seen anything like it and neither had we.

For some reason this morning’s thunderstorm brought this story out of unvisited memories from long ago, things that were important at the time, now all but forgotten. In spite of the dream, to this day I still like thunderstorms.

The Fourth of July is getting ever closer and the weather will be perfect for both partying and fishing. Thunderstorms are expected tonight and into tomorrow morning, then gradually winding down. Saturday will be cloudy with the wind shifting from the southeast to the west, remaining in that direction throughout the week. It couldn’t be better.

Lately, fishing has been picking up in the area. Even the walleye fishing has been good with some very nice sized fish being caught this week. Anglers using crankbaits like the LIVE TARGET Rainbow Smelt Banana Bait are having good success, especially with larger fish. Pike fishing has slowed a bit while bass fishing has been very good, at times exceptional. Crappies have started to move out of the shallows and out to their summertime haunts, the same with sunfish. This coming weekend and the following week look promising so I hope you get a chance to get out on the lake and catch some fish.

The Wall of Fame is starting to fill up so be sure to post your fish pictures on our timeline so that you too can be seen on the Wall of Fame!
