A few days back was the first day of open water fishing for this season. It was extremely windy, but it was “a great day on the water”. In about 2 1/2 to 3 hours I caught 10 bass, 2 catfish and lost another 4 bass.
The pattern was to fish the windiest shore possible, and since the wind was from the SW it was doing it job on the east and north shores.
All fish were caught from 2 to 20 feet out from shore.
They were caught on a Natural Forage Baits green shad Swim Bait, rigged on a BFishn Tackle unpainted, H20 Precision Jig Head, Blitz Lures LLC Spotted Goby 1/2 oz Blade, and TTI-Blakemore Casey’s Runner Head with a NFB shad colored Lil’ Killer. All of these had the new Kick’n Bass Fish Attractants “stick” version of the Kick’N Crappie applied.
The most fish were caught on the Swim Bait rig where I applied the Kick’N Crappie to the H20 jig head and inside the body slits on the Swim Bait.
Not only did you have to fish the windiest area possible, but it had to be done with a very slow pump, sometimes letting the Swim Bait fall to the bottom and set for a second or two.
Another help was to hit the rip rap, and any weeds that are already starting to grow.
As could be expected, the bass still had their bright red mouths and throats. The water temp was only 34 to 35 degrees, but with the sun and wind whipping things up that area was most likely just slightly warmer. Plus, there was a lot of food being dredged up by wave action.
Pepper had fun leaning over the shore and snapping at the white caps as they broke on shore, while his ears were flapping in the breeze.
The bass ranged from 14 to 18 inches, with most being over 16 inches, and the catfish were in the 5 pound range.
