SD man sentenced federally for hunting violations

A South Dakota man accused of hunting violations has been ordered in federal court to pay more than $13,000 in restitution and fines.

Ronald Mittleider, of Herreid, pleaded guilty to allowing hunters at his lodge to shoot more pheasants than legally allowed. He also admitted shooting and killing a hawk and an owl.

U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Mittleider will be on unsupervised federal probation for a year. He also has been punished for hunting violations in state court, where he was fined $500 and ordered to pay the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks department $20,000 in civil damages.
