Review: Advanced Catfishing Made Easy by Brad Durick

Advanced Catfishing Made Easy by Brad DurickWhether standing on the shore, wading in the shallows or fishing from a boat, Brad Durick’s Advanced Catfishing Made Easy will put some new tricks in your tackle box that will help you catch more catfish.

Durick is a long time student of catfish. As a student he has recognized and noted regularly occurring patterns in catfish behavior that have helped him catch more catfish, both as a recreational angler and as a catfish fishing guide.

Generally that behavior relates to seasons and existing day to day conditions. Durick connects the various elements of catfishing in detailed discussions that give his readers information that will aid them in catching more of the whiskered critters. His is a systematic approach to catfishing.

Durick wastes no time outlining the elements of catfishing that will make you a better angler. His knowledge comes from experience and knowledge gained from many hours on the water in pursuit of his whiskered friends. Interestingly enough, the first item on his list is a Smart phone and/or computer with Internet connections. With that entry he brings catfishing into the digital world we live in today.

Following his listing of needed equipment Durick sets off on a thorough discussion of those variables available on the Internet that catfish anglers should become familiar with. Things like water temperature, river conditions, barometric pressure and more are all discussed.

The remainder of the book is a page-by-page description of useful tips based on his substantial experience on the water. Night fishing vs. day, warm water vs. cold, sunlight vs. clouds are relevant examples.

He also discusses various combinations of the elements involved, like cold water in the spring when the barometer is falling. As readers progress in the book his aim becomes apparent. Durick is building a guide to catfishing that anglers can reference while on the water to match the conditions of the day that they are fishing.

I particularly liked his chapters related to the spawn. Those chapters include pre spawn, spawn and post spawn stages. Each stage is related to water temperatures and other changing conditions. He identifies 30 different scenarios with information on how to fish each of them over the range of the spawn.

Next Durick discusses summer, late summer, and fall. Once again he develops the various scenarios an angler might face with suggested techniques to use. For example, when the water is dropping in temperature, say from 40 to 32 degrees the fish have settled into holes. “Because the catfish are so sluggish, you can get away with a medium to medium heavy jigging rod to feel the lightest of bites,” writes Durick. “Don’t worry, because the fish won’t make the big runs like they do during the warmer times of the year.” Continue reading – http://www.examiner.com/article/review-advanced-catfishing-made-easy-by-brad-durick?CID=examiner_alerts_article
