The Bandit Mistake color pattern is the first and only crankbait featuring two different color patterns, one on each side. This dual pattern bait was never a real “mistake,” it was created to give bass give anglers a second chance at bass. If the fish doesn’t want the pattern on one side, the next cast (to the other side) gives it a different look.
The original Mistake pattern is one of Bandit’s most-popular baits, and now anglers can make three additional “mistakes,” with the Crossbreed, the Malfunction and the Mistaken Identity. Today we look at the Mistaken Identity pattern and get some advice from guide and tournament angler, Jimmy Mason, who catches Bandit bass from some of Alabama’s most-legendary waters. MISTAKEN IDENTITY
Colors: Fire Tiger/Root Beer
When/Where: A true contrast of styles — multiple personalities, even — this pattern has Mason stoked.
“I throw Root beer a lot in clear water, but I only use fire tiger in dirty water, so this is a pattern that may work in both – but it really works in heavily pressured waters where bass have never seen anything like it.
“It’s not as bright as a fire tiger and it’s as subtle as a root beer. It’s something that really gives your bait a different look, and in a highly-pressured situation, that’s going to give you an advantage.”
As Mason notes, the ricochet factor will be particularly important for this strongly contrasting bait.
“With that fire tiger side, it gets the fish’s attention from a distance,” he said. “In the same way, when the bait shifts to the opposite side, that root beer pattern almost causes the bait to disappear and give the illusion of getting away.”
Notably, in tidal waters, where water clarity can change rapidly over short distances, the Mistaken Identity color pattern gives anglers a single tool for fishing multiple levels of visibility.
