New Florida Reef

New Florida ReefArtificial Reef 6 FL-Thousands of tons of concrete have found a new home on the ocean floor off Martin County’s coast. Barges have started lugging 3,500 tons of concrete culverts about eight miles out from the inlet and dumping them in 65 feet of water. After months of careful planning, Martin County’s newest artificial reef system is becoming a reality.

Weather permitting, the county hopes to finish dumping all of the concrete within the next three weeks. The artificial reef will consist of seven 150-foot patches of underwater concrete.

The artificial reef will be a big boon to not only the environment, but also fishermen and scuba divers. Coastal engineers said the artificial reef will protect natural reefs by offering anglers and divers a new attraction to check out.
