Grizzly Bear Found Dead After Attack On Hunter

A 350-pound female grizzly bear has been found dead a short distance from the spot where a hunter was attacked on Tuesday in Alberta, Canada.  Brendan Cox, a spokesman for Alberta Solicitor General and Public Safety, said a specialized “bear response team” found the dead grizzly about 125 yards from the scene of the attack north of Swan Hills.

The hunter fired his gun at the bear during the attack, and Cox said the bear appears to have been shot. An autopsy will be performed in Edmonton to confirm the exact cause of death.

The bear had one cub, believed by wildlife officers to be less than two years old.  Cox said the cub will not be captured.  “The bear response team feels the cub has a good chance of survival, so they won’t be pursuing it,” he said.  The hunter was attacked from behind while alone in the forest about nine kilometres northwest of town on Tuesday morning.

The attack continued until the hunter was able to reach his gun and fire off a round.  More here…
