Eternal Vigilance – Knife Rights on Memorial Day

Knife Rights 1On this Memorial Day we again honor those who gave their lives for our liberties. It is a day to reflect on their sacrifice. I am reminded, yet again, that it is up to us to ensure those sacrifices were not made in vain. The highest honor and best celebration we can offer their memory is to continue to fight for the liberties for which they sacrificed.  Memorial Day always reminds me of President Abraham Lincoln’s immortal speech at Gettysburg:

“It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Lincoln’s words ring as true today as they did back in 1863. The liberties and freedoms that were in peril back then are threatened today in ways he could never have imagined. It is up to those of us who cherish the extraordinary beacon of opportunity that the United States and our Constitution represent to continue to fight those who would destroy this great nation, turning it into a shadow of what makes it great.

Please take a moment as your enjoy today’s celebrations to reflect on what it is we are celebrating and recommit yourself to the cause. The masthead of the Knife Rights web site includes these prophetic words from Thomas Jefferson, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”  In the case of Knife Rights, it is the defense of our right to own and carry the knife we choose that constitutes that vigilance.
