Crappie Masters South Carolina State Championship goes to Huffstetler and Koon

crappie masters logoThe Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters Tournament Trail held the South Carolina State Championship, March 4 and 5 on Lake Greenwood near Greenwood, SC. Greenwood is a relatively deep lake, especially towards the dam. It is long and narrow with a bunch of creek arms reaching out from the main body of the lake. Most of the creeks have 20 feet of water, some places 30. It has some flooded timber in spots and a lot of man-made structure in the lake.

We are here for the SC state Championship,” said Crappie Masters spokesman Brian Sowers before the tournament. “A lot of excitement in town about this tournament. They have a great campaign going on aimed at enhancing the Greenwood destination/location. It is an outstanding fishery. The anglers really like coming to the lake because they catch fish in great numbers and they also catch some quality size fish.”

“Greenwood offers an exciting tournament,” continued Sowers. “History suggests that a long lining team is likely to win, but there are a number of teams that will be pushing. Those two different techniques are generally used on Greenwood. It is a little early in the year to do single poling so long lining will probably be the key to victory for the winning team.”

Sowers prognostications turned out to be right on track. Mike Huffstetler and Ray Koon, posted a two-day total of 23.74 pounds to take home the crown and become the South Carolina State Champions. “We were longline trolling,” stated Huffstetler. “We were running about 1.4 MPH by the GPS. The fish were in deep water, but very shallow in the water column.” Continue reading – http://www.examiner.com/article/crappie-masters-south-carolina-state-championship-goes-to-huffstetler-and-koon?CID=examiner_alerts_article
