Colorado Outdoors Clinics for Women

Colorado Outdoors Clinics for WomenAs a growing number of women participate in hunting or fishing, the need for clinics and education is increasing to help them have success in the field. To assist and encourage women to pursue hunting and fishing on their own, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the National Rifle Association, are partnering to offering a free, women-only Cast and Blast on Sunday, July 13 in Basalt.

Women-only classes are among the most popular and fill quickly.

For details, location and registration, contact the Glenwood Springs Colorado Parks and Wildlife office at 970-947-2920. Space is limited. A $20 refundable deposit is required upon registration.

“This class is designed as an entry level clinic teaching basic techniques,” said District Wildlife Manager and instructor Matt Yamashita of Basalt. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to take the first step toward getting involved with hunting and fishing in Colorado.”

The Basalt Cast and Blast is offered through Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Hunter Outreach Program and is taught by CPW staff and volunteers. The day-long event covers the basics of fly fishing, including knot-tying and casting, followed by an opportunity to implement these techniques on the water. The shooting portion introduces participants to basic shotgun safety and shooting techniques, concluding with participants practicing with clay targets on a trap range.

Participants are reminded that Cast and Blast is not a Hunter Education course, which is required prior to purchasing a hunting license. For more information about Hunter Education, including finding a class near you, visit www.cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/HunterEducation.aspx.

To participate in the Cast and Blast, a valid fishing license is required; however, a one-day license is acceptable.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch, snacks, water, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain gear and any other personal supplies.

CPW’s Hunter Outreach Program includes workshops, clinics, seminars and educational hunts that focus on teaching the skills, ethics and traditions of hunting to novice youth and women.
