Big lures catch big bass

Big Bass - FLThere are days in the Everglades when anyone can cast a lure into the water and catch a bass. But to consistently catch quality fish, it takes a plan and persistence, which are two of the keys to the bass tournament success of Steve Forssell and Rodd Sayler. One of the top teams in South Florida, Forssell and Sayler target big, aggressive bass by throwing big lures all day long.

Their goal is not to catch a lot of fish, but to catch a handful of big fish.

“We’re just looking for five good bites,” said Sayler, of Sunrise, during a recent trip out of Everglades Holiday Park.

“We don’t mess with the little ones. We try to get a limit in the morning, which kind of takes the heat off a little bit, but that’s not what we’re looking for.”

“We fish for aggressive fish,” said Forssell, of Coconut Creek. “The difference between us and a lot of people is we cover a lot of water. Once you find a concentration of fish, you can slow down.”

That strategy paid off in the recently concluded King of the Glades series. Sayler and Forssell didn’t win any tournaments, but they won the points title, $1,000 and handsome trophies.

A few weeks ago, they caught five bass weighing 26.49 pounds, including the big bass of 6.67 that Forssell caught on a jig, to win the Bass-N-Fools Spring Fling at Holiday.

Forssell’s favorite lures are a 1-ounce jig with a bulky trailer, which he pitches in the vegetation lining the canals, and a 16-inch snake, which he swims on the surface. Sayler throws a Zara Super Spook from start to finish. Read more….
