Bass fisherman killed

James “Jimmy” JohnsonA man killed at a Jackson motel over the weekend was in the area to compete in a fishing tournament. Bassmaster identified the angler as James “Jimmy” Johnson, 56, of Ganado, Texas. He was competing in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open tournament on the Ross Barnett Reservoir this week, according to a statement on the Bassmaster website.

A tournament manager for the Bassmaster Opens said a friend of Johnson’s told him that Johnson was shot after he found someone burglarizing his boat, Bassmaster.com reported.

The shooting happened before 8 p.m. Sunday at the Motel 6 off Interstate 55, police said. Johnson had been shot in the face, police said.

Johnson’s wife was staying with him at the motel and was inside the bathroom when the shooting happened, according to a police report. She was not injured.

Police released a surveillance photo Monday in the hopes of identifying the suspects in a fatal shooting at a motel.
