A Tale of Two Rifles

A Tale of Two RiflesI understand there are 14 golf clubs in a complete bag. I don’t play golf because it would take time away from my hunting, shooting or fishing. Since there is no such thing as an all around big game rifle you need several. The person that has one rifle might be good or not interested. I go light, medium and heavy depending on the hunting situation. If I was out West there would be a Long Range Rifle as well.

You have my idea of a light rifle on this months ODU Magazine “Sparrow Hawk.” Me on the CZ-527 7.62×39 I like it. But we are going to talk about the other two, The Ruger Scout Gunsite 308 and the Henry 45-70. Either one could be called the All Around Eastern Deer Rife. When I test a rifle its not meant to be a torcher test, it just winds up that way due to my proclivity to go where angels fear to tred.

The Scout has a fine Vortex Crossfire II with the V-bright Iluminated dot. Its a different ball game with Buck Horn Iron sights on the 45-70 so it went up the tree in the morning on my all day hunt . I can’t see he iron sights close to dark so the Henry is my daytime gun for now (It will get a Vortex scope soon)w then it becomes ready for an evening encounter with perhaps a 3 to 500 pound piggy.

As luck would have it the perfect spot produced no bucks or boars, so the Henry didn’t get “Blooded.” Hunting with Ruger in the afternoon found me deep in Ft Polk WMA. Tree stand hunting was bringing me luck so I went in.

I’m a product of Ft Polk Army Basic Training “Tiger Land” during Vietnam. Everything the Army tested for Jungle Warefare, including me, came from there. When I hunt there now I alone on public land, the cup cake hunters don’t go there. I killed a small pig in about 30 minutes..

Then the storm hit I didn’t see coming I was 1.3 miles form the truck, not good It was hours before I got out of there soaking wet. The Scout and Scope cleaned up well as I had waterproofed the rifle with Bore Butter…it works good.

The Fiocchi 150 grain soft points dropped the little boar in his tracks, it was only 40 yards but stalking that close is real hunting….Pass it on.
