A Good Range Day

It was Hot and Jennifer and I had been languishing under the air conditioner most of the summer. We are blessed with a fine State Run Shooting range at Woodworth Louisiana.

It took 15 minutes to unload all the guns and gear I had to test and check zero. Most of the guns on the range were AR-15s and none of them were hunters, except my new buddy Mike Jones. He walked by with a brand new Henry Lever action 357 magnum carbine. Now there is a Hunter and we made fast friends. We had a little fun with his rifle and my Henry 45-70 both could hit a dime at 50 yards and no deer or hog is safe out to 100 yards.

Checking the zero on my Ruger Scout Rifle in 308 Winchester I knew it was right on with Fiocchi 150 grain soft points but I wanted to us my Barnes Vortex 130 grain TTSX ammo. Now I know your not going to believe this but I only needed to shoot three rounds; they were dead on the old zero with a different brand and bullet weight. That’s not suppose to happen at all. But at $38 a box I will take a little luck. I’m naming the rifle Morgana, it has to be a witch.

My favorite little light Deer Rifle is my CZ-527 in 7.62×39 was more standard as I switched from 154 grain soft points to Hornady 123 grain SST ammo. The first group you could cover with a dime at 50 yards but about 4 inches high I wanted it 1 inch high and 50. 16 clicks down and I was done.

The Muddy Girl got to split her first playing card with the XM77/22Ruger/Vortex Tree Squirrel Discombobulator, as strange as that rifle looks it puts all the bullets in one hole. The long eye relief scope works perfectly for Jennifer who is only 4 feet 10, and just likes the way it fits her.

I finished up with the Henry 22, it just punched one hole shot after shot. I think it will get a new scope soon maybe a Vortex.

I only saw 2 other hunting type riflemen and they seemed to know what they were doing. The crowd of AR-15 shooters mostly shot up $200 worth of ammo and never checked zero, groups were hand with extended finger sized (from the bench???) Maybe its time for me to get one just to show the Operators how to shoot it.

Then we were treated to some real shooting by a man with a beard, and a brand new Barret 50. (with iron sights) He fired up two magazines of ammo and gave us all temporary bipolar trauma and tinnitus as most wanted to strangle him and like him at the same time. It made some fine holes in the dirt for about 4 grand plus ammo….Pass it on
