2014 BassCat Invitational Recap

2014 BassCat Invitational RecapBaxter Bulletin 1st Reported: Different partner, same result for Dave Crisenbery. The angler from Flippin won his second BassCat Owners Invitational bass tournament in three years — and second straight on Norfork Lake — as he and partner Larry Davenport, of Yellville, netted 10 bass weighing 28.31 pounds over two days to capture first place by a landslide Saturday at Lake Norfork Marina in Henderson.

Crisenbery and Davenport caught five bass weighing 14.42 pounds Saturday to add to their 13.89-pound catch Friday, giving them a 28.31 total to win by almost 7 pounds more than their nearest competitors.

The duo took home a 2014 BassCat Eyra bass boat, matching trailer, Mercury Pro XS 250 OptiMax outboard and Motor Guide trolling motor.

The last time the BassCat event was held on Norfork Lake in 2012, Crisenbery and his brother, Gene, were victorious.

“I felt pretty good about it,” Crisenbery said of his and Davenport’s chances, after practicing earlier in the week. “I didn’t know if we could win or not, but I thought we could have a shot at it.”

Crisenbery and Davenport were already in second place following the first day, and were sitting in good position after a strong start early Saturday morning.

“We started early this morning, and within 15 or 20 minutes, we had three keeper largemouth, and after that it kind of dried up,” Crisenbery said. “We caught six or seven short fish during the day, and at 12:45 we only had those three in the boat. We knew the largemouth had shut off on us.”

A little late luck was needed to put the team over the edge, and Davenport made it happen.

“I caught a couple smallmouth later in the day that helped us quite a bit,” said Davenport, who has fished the event since 2006 and finished as high as fifth place. “I think we just pulled up on the right spot early in the morning and got some good bites.

“Things went kind of dead after that, but those two smallmouth helped out a lot. Fishing with this many people, there’s a lot of luck involved, too.”

“One of them was a 3-pounder,” Crisenbery added of Davenport’s smallmouth. “We stayed there in that spot until it was time to come weigh-in at 2:20.”
