Apple Tree Plots Make Deer Season Sweeter

Apple Tree Food Plots

Apples may not be the stuff of your typical food plot, but when planted properly and tended to they sweeten any deer hunting honey hole.

According to Charles Robinson, an avid deer hunter and owner of Robinson Landscaping and Nursery in northern Michigan, an apple tree plot (just like any other food plot) needs tender loving care to reach maturity.

“I think many people plant a few fruit trees and think they are good to go,” Robinson said. “They come back several months later and discover a dead tree. Others care for a tree for a few weeks or months after planting it and forget about it. Apple trees will reach maturity faster and produce a better crop if they are consistently cared for.”

Here’s advice from Robinson to make sure your apple tree investment pays sweet dividends.  Read more….

Lights, Camera… Satisfaction: Deer Cam Tactics

Before deer cameras were a regular hunting tool, the best way to pattern deer was to spend many hours scouting, observing and recording the movements of deer. A few tricks at observing them indirectly were tying sewing thread across trails, raking soft soil or sand along field entrances or checking fence crossings. The broken thread, interpretation of tracks and evidence of hair revealed places where deer have come and gone.

Numbers of deer, buck to doe ratios, sightings of trophy animals, and effectiveness of months of management were based on a few field visits and bits of indirect evidence gleaned from the field. Affordable digital cameras have changed the way hunters scout deer and help them understand their local deer like never before.

Digital Deer

In today’s busy world the time to scout is a luxury many weekend deer hunters don’t always have. Thanks to digital technology cameras are much more reliable, affordable and efficient. They are both a scouting tool and a way for landowners to assess the quality and quantity of their deer herd.

To get the most out of your deer camera, here are some ways that hunters and landowners are using them and tips for digital cameras. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

Ready For Some New Venison Recipes?

One thing I’ve learned over the years from Scott Leysath is that cooking venison, or almost any wild game for that matter, isn’t as difficult or nerve-wracking as some folks seem to believe.

Leysath lives in California but don’t let that throw you off. He’s a diehard hunter and angler, loves the outdoors – when he’s not whipping up something in the kitchen or on a Camp Chef stove in the field – and is a great chef. I’ve known him for about 15 years, give or take a hunting season, and always enjoy visiting with him.  Continue reading more….  Article source deeranddeerhunting.com

Antler size determined by three factors

If you’re a serious deer hunter there’s nothing more exciting than the glint of first sunlight poking over the horizon, and then showcasing the impressive rack of that nice buck you’ve been hunting. Payola. You’re able to ease your gun up, make a good shot and track the blood trail to the fallen monarch. You’re duly proud of your trophy. It’s a nice 8-point with good antler mass, symmetry and tine length. One for the wall.

So how and why did that buck develop the way it did? What about antlers? They’re not horns; cows and goats have horns. Antlers are true bone that is grown and shed annually from pedicels on the frontal bones of a buck’s head. They are an indication of social status.

Formation and shedding, overall, are determined by photo period, that is, day length. Day length influences key hormone development, such as testosterone, that controls antler development, sloughing off of the nourishing velvet covering and, later, shedding of the antlers after the rut. Antlers start forming in spring, not too long after last year’s are shed.  Continue reading more….  Article source The New Star

Muzzy DX-3 Broadhead for Easton’s Deep Six System

Muzzy is proud to introduce the DX-3 broadhead designed to work with the new Deep Six inserts and ultra micro-diameter Injexion arrows from Easton. The 100-grain, 3-blade Muzzy DX-3 features a tapered ferrule, modified shank and slimmer thread to make it compatible with the Deep Six system.

Deep Six inserts provide 25% more thread engagement to keep points secure inside the insert. Stainless-steel material is 65% stronger than conventional aluminum components.

The Easton Injexion is the smallest-diameter carbon arrow on the market (just .236 compared to .294 for a standard diameter carbon arrow). In fact, it’s 30 percent smaller than the Easton Axis, which is 30 percent smaller than the standard carbon arrow.
The Muzzy DX-3, coupled with the Easton Deep Six System, produces less wind drag than other larger broadhead-arrow combinations, resulting in increased accuracy and deeper penetration. When the same amount of energy is concentrated in the smaller Deep Six/DX-3 package, the result is devastating. The DX-3 also fits Easton’s Axis and Full Metal Jacket with Deep Six inserts. With a cutting diameter of 1-1/4″ and a .025″ blade thickness, the DX-3 is a deadly addition to the Muzzy arsenal and the perfect companion to the new Easton Deep Six System.

NSSF Study Shows Lower-Than-Expected Rates of Hunting Among Recent Hunter Ed Graduates

Hunting SurveyFilled classrooms at Hunter Safety courses are a good thing, but perhaps more important is the number of students that actually participate in hunting after they graduate.  A recent survey, funded by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and conducted by Southwick Associates, focused on participation levels of students in the years immediately following their graduation from hunter education class.  The survey revealed that a significant percentage of hunter education students do not buy a license after graduating. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
