Guntersville Grass Issues

Fish Lake Guntersville Guide ServiceAs we progress into 2014 the issue of the grass on Lake Guntersville seems to take front and center for me. We have gone through a very cold winter seeing ice form across areas of the lake that hasn’t been seen since the 1940’s. We are well into the growing season and the grass is still very spotty in most areas of the lake; the question that arises for me, is the take- over of the grass spraying by TVA more than we have been lead to believe?

There appears to be areas on the lake that showed signs of good grass growth in early May that is now dead, the grass has turned black and brown as if it has been sprayed. There is tons of floating eel grass all over the Siebold Creek area, it has pulled away from the bottom and floating all over the areas being in areas that don’t have boat houses or are path ways for boats. Many of us have observed spraying in the All-Reds Marina area, and have talked to some of the workers in the spraying boats and have been told that their instruction is to eliminate as much grass as they can regardless of where it is from the boat houses to the ledges and all areas in-between.

As most of my followers know I am an advocate of managing the grass, it is healthy for the fishing and boating combined. I am not an advocate of grass eradication as it will devastate the bass fishing on Guntersville. It is hard to tell if these reports that we are getting are just plain trolls from the workers or is it the truth. Last week one of the guides approached the local Guntersville Chamber and asked about the grass and was given the same information back that we all new; the kicker was the Chamber came back and said that there were no workers spraying on the lake the day he had talked to one of them! Yet we have video of the worker that he talked to on the lake spraying the day we were told that no one was out there.

Where does the truth lie? If the grass is eliminated it will devastate the bass fishing and the tax revenue generated from it. This whole issue to me “quacks like a duck.”
